American Radio Archives

Housed in the Special Collections Department at the Grant R. Brimhall Library in Thousand Oaks, California, the American Radio Archives houses 67 of the 68 scripts for the radio series The Private Practice of Dr. Dana with Chandler in the starring role; most labeled "As Broadcast." The American Radio Archives also houses all of the scripts for the radio series Our Miss Brooks in which Chandler played the bashful biologist Philip Boynton opposite Eve Arden's Connie Brooks. Labeled "As Broadcast," the scripts cover the years that Jeff Chandler was contracted by CBS Radio (1947 to 1953).

Patrons and visitors alike with interest in the Golden Age of Radio will find a plentitude of data in the recently-published book, Radio Series Scripts, 1930-2001 (Jefferson, North Carolina: McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers). Compiled by Jeanette M. Berard and Klaudia Englund of the American Radio Archives, most of the scripts are from the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Margaret Herrick Library

Research on Jeff Chandler began at the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, California. Located just half a block from where Jeff Chandler had an office in the 1950s (the building is still there), the Margaret Herrick Library is a non-circulating library, with an extensive periodical section, production files, biographies, stills, lobby cards as well as a Special Collections Department where patrons can listen to episodes from the radio series The Lux Radio Theatre while reading from the actual scripts (by appointment only).

Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters

Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters, located in the basement of a bank at the corner of Sunset and Vine where NBC Radio City once stood, is the largest private collection of recorded radio programs on tapes, discs and scripts. They house 63 of the 68 original recordings of the radio series The Private Practice of Dr. Dana; they house most, if not all, of the original recordings of the radio series Our Miss Brooks. Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters has valuable resources such as a complete set of bound volumes of Radio Life magazine; Radio Life eventually evolved into TV Guide.

Charles E. Young Research Library

Through research of the Morton Fine Papers housed at the Charles E. Young Research Library, Dennis Potter found valuable information on the radio series Our Miss Brooks. In addition, "The Charles E. Young Research Library Department of Special Collections houses and provides access to the UCLA Library’s central collection of rare books and manuscripts in the humanities, social sciences, and visual arts, as well as transcripts of interviews conducted by the UCLA Oral History Program."

Louis B. Mayer Library

The Louis B. Mayer Library of the American Film Institute houses, among their vast collection of books and periodicals, various special collections, including the Robert Aldrich Collection from which Dennis Potter gathered data needed in order to write the "Behind the Scenes" section for the motion picture Ten Seconds to Hell (1959) in the book Jeff Chandler: Film, Record, Radio, Television and Theater Performances.

Warner Bros. Archives

The Warner Bros. Archives housed at the University of Southern California is "the largest single studio collection in the world." Further, the archives "contains the records of Warner Bros. Pictures Inc. and its motion picture-related subsidiaries (including First National and Vitagraph)." Through the Warner Bros. Archives, Dennis Potter researched, in depth, Marjorie Hoshelle's (Jeff Chandler's wife) association with Warner Bros. as a contract player as well as Jeff Chandler's last days as an actor while on location in the Philippines for filming of Merrill's Marauders (1962).

Universal Studios Collection

Jeff Chandler's association with Universal-International is reflected in his involvement in dozens of motion pictures, from Abandoned and Sword in the Desert (both 1949) to Raw Wind in Eden (1958) and A Stranger in My Arms (1959). Through Universal-International's association with Decca Records, Chandler wrote music and provided vocals for 45 rpm records, including I Should Care (1954), Only the Very Young (1955), and Six Bridges to Cross (1955).

The publicity and promotional files for nearly all of these productions (and many more) are housed at the Universal Studios Collection of the University of Southern California's Cinema-Television Library.
