Mutt and Jeff
Before Dennis Potter adopted the pen name, "Jeff Wells," he often wondered why so many people called him "Jeff." Some years ago, a friend suggested that maybe Dennis brought to mind in people the tall character in the "first successful daily comic strip" and, later, one of the first comic books, Mutt and Jeff. Standing a few inches over six feet, Dennis could understand why others could confuse him for a tall character in a familiar comic strip; that is, until research revealed that "Mutt" (not "Jeff") is the taller of the two.
