When Dennis Potter decided to put together a book proposal on Jeff Chandler, he hadn't yet seen any of Jeff Chandler's motion pictures; it was Jeff Chandler's performance as a radio artist that sold Dennis on Jeff Chandler. As he prepared the book proposal, the famous Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California, presented a special screening of Man in the Shadow with a special appearance by and a question-and-answer session with actress Colleen Miller (who portrayed the character Skippy Renchler in Man in the Shadow). A few weeks later, Dennis submitted a book proposal to four publishers; the first to respond positively: McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers; within a matter of months, Dennis had a signed book contract.
