Jeff Chandler-Radio
Jeff Chandler - Radio Jeff Chandler was born as Ira Grossel in Brooklyn, New York, on December 15, 1918. Before finding success as Cochise, the feared Apache Chief in the 20th Century-Fox production, Broken Arrow (1950), Jeff Chandler (under the name "Ira Grossel" and, later, as "Jeff Chandler") had a thriving freelance career as a radio actor. In the 15-minute weekly radio show That's a Good Idea, Jeff played as many as eight parts in one show, receiving excellent training in versatility. With an adaptable voice and a knack for mimicry, he could do all kinds of voices, among them, Clark Gable, James Stewart, and James Cagney. Jeff flourished on radio with work on air shows such as The Man Called X, Rogue's Gallery, The Private Practice of Dr. Dana and Our Miss Brooks. As his work on radio increased, he benefited from the close proximity of the theaters, the studios and his agent's office that made up Hollywood's "Radio City." Located on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street, NBC Radio was a 15-minute run west on Sunset from CBS Radio; ABC Radio sat across from NBC and a block south from the Vine Street Theatre, where Jeff often performed in The Lux Radio Theatre.
